Covered the UK School Games at Ice Sheffield for British Gymnastics last weekend. Lighting here was a challenge. Had to shoot at 2500 iso to 3200 iso with a shutter speed of 1/400s. Colour balance was also difficult to get right. The challenges of indoor sports photography! Looks like they might have two sets of lighting at the arena as I have had reports that the lighting is very good here.

Glasgow World Cup Gymnastics 16.4.11

17 04 2011

Covered this competition for British Gymnastics in Glasgow.

Racea is the womens Champion.

16/04 – The women’s event took place today in front of a sell out crowd in the Kelvin Hall arena. There were some strong contenders in the group but with a lot of falls counted, the medal places were fought right to the finish. Racea (ROU) took the top spot after a clean all-around performance showing composure throughout. Lopez (VEN) took the Silver medal position with consistent scores on all pieces. The young Romanian Haidu grabbed the Bronze despite two falls, performing an energetic floor routine to secure her place in the top 3. Britain’s Hannah Whelan finished in 5th, with some good work but unfortunate falls that left her outside the medals. Jennifer Pinches also from Great Britain finished in 8th, she ended with a solid performance on floor but earlier mistakes proved to be costly.

Britain’s Daniel Purvis takes the men’s title!

16/04 – The Men’s competition at the Glasgow World Cup all-around contained a lot of experienced gymnasts that all had the potential to take home a medal. Dan Purvis (GBR) gave a superb performance throughout to claim the Gold medal in front of a supportive home crowd. Purvis was closely followed by the recently crowned European Champion, Phillip Boy (GER), whose fall on Vault cost him the title. The bronze went to Rafael Martinez from Spain who performed some exciting routines to please the crowd. Britain’s Sam Hunter finished down in 8th position whilst wildcard Daniel Keating’s (GBR) used the competition to enter back onto the World stage following a serious knee injury, although he could not be counted in the overall rankings, Keatings put in a very promising performance- 87.366. Covered the English Championships at Stoke this weekend. Three days of packed competition with the Men and Women competing at the same time. Fenton Manor in Stoke is not the best lit venue and I found myself shooting at 2500 asa f2 at 1/400s. Not great if your trying to freeze dynamic action. Used a Nikon D3 and the new Nikon 200 F2 Lens. Keep reading how much better the D3s is in low light and this situation would be ideal for this camera. For me the D3 is limited to 3200 asa. How much better is the D3s? If you have any experience using the D3 v D3s in this type of environment please let me know if its worth upgrading!
Back to the gymnastics .This is an early season tester for many of the gymnasts. Beth Tweddle produced a new bar and floor routine and finished first on bars. It was the British Womens Champion Hannah Whelan however who took top spot in the all round competition.
The mens competition was won by Kristian Thomas finishing aheahd of Matthew Firth from the City Of Leeds Gym Club.

GB Gymnast Imogen Cairns and Coach Liz Kincaid at Lilleshall

29 01 2011

Had an opportunity last weekend to photograph GB international Gymnast Imogen Cairns and her coach Liz Kincaid during training at Lilleshall National Sports Centre the home of British Gymnastics.Imogen is pictured holding a host of medals which she won at last years Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The lighting at Lilleshall is not the best giving me the ideal opportunity to test out the new Nikon 200 f 2 VR 11. Shot at F2 with a shutter speed of 1/250s the photos are super sharp.Really pleased with this purchase.
British gymnasts are going from strength to strength and have a superb set up at Lilleshall. My coverage this year starts with the English Championships in February.
