Penalty Shootout

31 08 2011

Covering a Junior Football Tournament recently and was fortunate to catch this group of young players during a penalty shoot out.I had to run the length of two pitches to get the shot, not easy as I was carrying a 400 2.8 and an 70-200 2.8.I think it was worth it though. The enthusiasm of these young players deserved to be captured.

Liverpool v Trabzonsporas 18.8.10 Europa Cup Qualifying

31 08 2010

This was the second football game of the season for me and it was raining! Traveled to the match by car and cycle. As well as helping to keep my fitness levels up it also means no parking problems at the ground. I carried the camera gear in a North Face backpack and a ThinTank Photo belt system.

This match was a bit of a challenge for Liverpool and their new manager Roy Hodgson. The Turkish fans were in good voice before the kick off .

I was using the Nikon 400 2.8 for the first time for a night game. What a difference this proved to be. Super sharp and with the extra reach I was able to shoot action at the half way line.I was shooting at 3200 asa 1/1000s shutter speed and an aperture of 2.8.

Torres came on for Liverpool in the second half and I was able to capture a few images.

Liverpool new signing Joe Cole was also in the thick of the action and had a good game despite missing a penalty. Liverpool eventually finished 1-0 winners and carry a slender league to Turkey for the away leg.

Southport v AFC Wimbledon Blue Square Premier League 14.8.10

14 08 2010

First match of the new campaign for Southport.Promoted last year from the Conference North. Decided to cycle part way again for todays match. Left the car in Birkdale and cycled about three miles each way. Not sure if this is a good idea with a 400 2.8 on your back!  Haig Avenue was bathed in sunshine, the pitch looked in great condition and the contingent of Wimbledon fans were in good voice.

Used a 400 2.8 along with a D300. This combination giving me plenty of reach.Shot the game from the halfway line and was able to capture action from each goalmouth.  Prefer shooting with the D3 the viewfinder is so much bigger and brighter. Still on bright daylight games the D300 still performs well.Shooting on aperture priority auto very little post editing was required, even when shooting directly into the sun.Enjoyed this first game of the season and look forward to covering more of Southport’s home matches in the coming months.

Final score  Southport 0 AFC  Wimbledon 1.

Europa Cup Football

11 04 2010

Covered another night of European Football at Anfield on Thursday 8.4.12. Arrived at the ground early to avoid the traffic. Reserved a place pitch side assuming Liverpool would attack the Anfield Road end first.

I was under instructions to transmit some photos at half time so I had my laptop and mobile broadband ready.I did some pre match shots of the crowd, celebrity guests and the players during the warm up.
My plan was to shoot the first half and transmit during half time.I had charged my 2 year old MacBook Pro earlier and was surprised to see it only had a small amount of power left in the battery. To compound the problem I couldn’t get a signal on the mobile broadband.I had a reasonable shot of Lucas scoring a first half goal and no way to send it through to the agency. No choice but to shoot the second half and transmit everything after the match in the photographers room using the available wi-fi. This resulted in a late finish and I left the ground some one and a half hours after the match finished.

Liverpool v Unirea Urziceni

19 02 2010

Another freezing cold wet night at Anfield. Liverpools lacklustre performance did little to lift the crowd.
Liverpool dominated possession but were unable to break down the visitors and created few clear-cut chances.Liverpool scored a late goal finishing 1-0 winners. This should make for an interesting second leg.

I was concentrating tonight on capturing close ups of individual players. I used a 1.4 converter combined with a 300 2.8 lens and a D3. Once again superb low light performance from the D3.Exposure readings were 4000 asa at f2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/800.

Everton v Sporting 16.2.10

17 02 2010

Covered Everton’s home game against Sporting Lisbon last night in the Europa Cup.Shooting under floodlights is not the same problem as it used tobe since the introduction of the D3.My brief last night was to capture some individual player images for use as stock,as well as action photos for news.

I used a Nikon D3 and a 3002.8 lens. The 300 2.8 is a sharp lens and autofocuses fast, however it can be a bit short for football especially if you are shooting from behind the goal.I brought along a 1.4 converter and used this to shoot with in the second half. Although loosing a stop it made for tighter framing and more suitable for capturing individual players.I used the following camera settings for the match 3200 asa, shutter speed of 800s and an aperture of f2.8.Using the 1.4 converter I set the film speed to 5000 asa.

The match itself was decent, with Everton comfortably winning 2-0 with four minutes to go.  Distin was sent off for upending Liedson inside the box and Veloso calmly slotted home an away goal. This makes for an interesting second leg.
